Ontology Summit 2022 Planning

Ontology Summit 2022 Theme and Tracks

Theme: Dealing with Disasters

The COVID-19 pandemic as well as other pandemics and disasters have prompted an impressive, worldwide response by governments, industry, and the academic community. Ontologies can play a significant role in search, data description, interoperability and harmonization of the increasingly large data sources that are relevant to disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This summit will examine the role that ontologies can play in disasters. The first track will be an overview of the notion of disaster. The other tracks will examine how the different kinds of disaster are employing ontologies.

Summit Chair: Ravi Sharma

  • Track 1: Disaster attributes
    • There are several incompatible definitions for the notion of disaster and for related terminology by national and international agencies.
    • The information needed for the complex events of predicting, monitoring, mitigating and managing disasters and risks is complex and spans many organizations (both governmental and non-governmental), countries, languages and cultures.
    • Some examples of disaster attributes include: geo-temporal extent, categories of risks and types of disasters, and sources, such as natural and deliberate.
  • Track 2: Pandemics
    • Ongoing pandemics include tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and COVID-19.
  • Track 3: Environment Disasters
    • Examples include climate change, environmental pollution, wildfires, floods and habitat loss.
  • Track 4: Space Disasters
    • Some examples include:
      • Debris
      • Artificial satellites
      • Asteroids / Comets
      • Solar activity & impacts to Earth

Discussion

[12:23] RaviSharma: Gary presented a framework from Shirley and use of semantics in defining Hazard ontology using UNDRR

[12:24] RaviSharma: Ken what phase, Gary second round of Funding

[12:25] RaviSharma: Kryzstoff J and Pascal Hitlzer have done work on it

[12:26] RaviSharma: Ken said this would be great to have ontologies ahead of disasters happening.

[12:26] RaviSharma: NSF funding

[12:31] janet singer: Gary: Was the work you were covering related to this EU effort from 2009 http://www.macs.hw.ac.uk/~yjc32/project/ref-ontology/ref-ontology%20examples/MONITOR_Base_Ontology_Report_1_0.pdf

[12:37] janet singer: Their 2008 paper published in Georisk https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Nikos-Koutsias/publication/249028678_MONITOR_Hazard_monitoring_for_risk_assessment_and_risk_communication/links/54981d640cf2519f5a1dbdee/MONITOR-Hazard-monitoring-for-risk-assessment-and-risk-communication.pdf?_sg%5B0%5D=SP2BAFdtddUYEh2Xtn6tNT7PLhELON8EZ-8xySlaG4yxrdkv5UsA0oGSa2vfMSmTg8-yr8a6b5_z7Pbm9W8pYA.-YtoMwAcq5k-h6N2yWakrXqvsRvAC725rjHj6md_E3ZoJe7lzi5hhDSHrU_aJOj9Aq-doraQFptnwbv0SMzWhA.dnpDXaTr06gto8Smgv9IQC1mLXg_Ga1eSAWEhUH60z8wFC9-GV1QHxt0c3yNNk7IqUY2zkoHzXUrHfobBSttbA&_sg%5B1%5D=-aTGOku7SPxCgzASfVAQAwp1dCmOJGOicQQXptKygirrifCE8-KXF6huvjdaDnrOOFReZDTQYFpxu5yyksZ9ok3Sr58hGY6HtiYmKh9urfeR.-YtoMwAcq5k-h6N2yWakrXqvsRvAC725rjHj6md_E3ZoJe7lzi5hhDSHrU_aJOj9Aq-doraQFptnwbv0SMzWhA.dnpDXaTr06gto8Smgv9IQC1mLXg_Ga1eSAWEhUH60z8wFC9-GV1QHxt0c3yNNk7IqUY2zkoHzXUrHfobBSttbA&_iepl=

[12:42] Gary BC: Have to go. Good luck on the discussion.

[12:43] RaviSharma: Ravi Commented that Gary can perhaps point this to potential track 1 speakers, Janet's EU work on risk ontologies.

[12:43] RaviSharma: Track 1 is still missing Situational Awareness.

KenBaclawski: I added it.

[12:49] RaviSharma: Ravi - will study MONITOR Projects. also

[12:58] RaviSharma: Ravi described areas of Track on environment disasters and agreed with Gary's suggestion that the domains will depend on the speakers we get.

[13:01] RaviSharma: Space Disasters will hopefully concentrate on Debris and technology solutions for mitigation

[13:02] RaviSharma: Robert will give a presentation in this track

[13:03] RaviSharma: Next week we would have done track oriented research and come up with more specific list of potential speakers.

[13:03] RaviSharma: thanks Ken and others.
